What we’re all about here at thriftmac

thriftmac started with the simple idea that Mac users could use a central place to find free software. The downloads here are meant to be totally free. There are no trials, no ads, no betas, no limitations. Apps are not included unless you can freely download them to your Mac and use all their features without restrictions for as long as you like.

This is the fifth iteration of thriftmac since starting out in 2006. Before that, it was known as Free for X. As the site has grown over the years, I’ve done my best to weed out apps that are no longer being developed or that have moved to a pay model. I also add new apps from time to time.

The original logo was an apple with a worm coming out of it. That worm later became know as Scrimpy — as suggested in a naming contest that wrapped up in January 2007.

My thanks to Textpattern for being an awesome and easy-to-use CMS. thriftmac is hosted on a StormWeb server in Vancouver.

Feel free to get in touch with me about free Mac apps, or follow thriftmac via the RSS feed.

Sometimes I talk about the world of free Mac apps in Scrimpy's Blog. Check out my favourites in Scrimpy’s Picks. For a really deep dive of this site, visit the thriftmac archive.

thriftmac is pretty good, but there other ways to find free Mac apps.

And if all that’s not enough of me, check out Newsonaut, my blog that mostly covers technology.
