GIMP 3.0 close to release after 20 years of work
GIMP, the unfortunately named free and open source alternative to Photoshop, has reached a milestone — version 3.0 release candidate.
That means they want people to download it, try it out, and report any bugs before they make version 3.0 officially available.
Version 1.0 was released in 1997, and version 2.0 came out in 2004, so it’s been a long time coming — a couple of decades in fact.
For better or worse, I’ve long been able to use Photoshop through work, so I haven’t had much motivation to take the Gnu Image Manipulation Program for a spin.
On the other hand, I’m glad GIMP exists and is maintained by a dedicated group of volunteers. Access to this type of software should not depend on whether you can afford it.
I know it’s too late, but I wish it wasn’t called “GIMP”. This is a derogatory word that really needs to be put behind us.
